KT announced on the 31st that the “KT Digital Citizen” project received the championship award in the ethical dimension of the information society at the “2024 WSIS (Information Society World Summit)” held in Geneva, Switzerland. KT is the first Korean company to win the WSIS award.
The KT Digital Citizen Project has been underway since 2022 with more than 20 companies and specialized institutions, including Ewha Womans University, Yonsei Severance Hospital, and Kim & Chang, to create a safe and secure sustainable digital world.
Institutions participating in KT’s digital citizenship project have developed and educated digital citizenship education contents that prevent digital over-immersion and cyberbullying. It is also working to prevent and resolve side effects in the digital environment by developing digital citizen type diagnosis and level test tools and providing psychological counseling for victims of digital side effects.
KT explained that the digital citizenship project was well-received for instilling correct digital cultural awareness to the lower grades of elementary school, who are most vulnerable to digital side effects such as addiction and excessive immersion, and providing easier and more fun education to children using AI speakers.
WSIS is an international conference centered on UN-affiliated organizations such as the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) to promote the efficient development of the information society and close the information gap between countries and classes. Since 2012, the WSIS Award has been created to select and award excellent institutions and companies in 18 categories, including information and communication infrastructure, access to information knowledge, and ethical perspectives in the information society.
Of the 1,050 projects submitted this time, more than 2 million officials from around the world voted online, winning the most selected project by category.
Oh Tae-sung, head of KT’s ESG Management Promotion Team, said, “This award is the result of KT’s balanced and sincere efforts to resolve the dysfunction caused by the rapid development of digital technology,” adding, “KT will continue to serve as a partner to spread the right digital utilization culture of children, who are the main players in the future.”
