OpenAI is bringing ChatGPT to academia with its first university partnership – Fortune

OpenAI is investing in the future of students. On Thursday, the company announced a first-of-its-kind partnership with Arizona State University, giving the school access to ChatGPT Enterprise.
As part of the partnership, the school plans to use the platform in its teaching, research, and internal organization. The university also plans to develop a personalized AI tutor for students, providing them help in specific courses, study topics, and writing, CNBC reports.
A joint press release between ASU and OpenAI noted that any data inputs by the university community will be “private and secure,” and the data will not be used to train OpenAI models. The partnership invites faculty and staff to submit ideas for best-use scenarios starting in February.
“The goal is to leverage our knowledge core here at ASU to develop AI-driven projects aimed at revolutionizing educational techniques, aiding scholarly research and boosting administrative efficiency,” ASU Chief Information Officer Lev Gonick said in the university’s announcement.
This collaboration comes as privacy and safety concerns about OpenAI remain. Last week, a Fortune investigation uncovered that the company—along with Meta—were found to have potentially enabled an uncensored AI economy where explicit content could thrive, including among children.
“Learning is core to why so many users love ChatGPT. ASU continues to lead in innovation by integrating ChatGPT into its educational programs,” OpenAI COO Brad Lightcap said in the press release. “We’re keen to learn from ASU, and to work toward expanding ChatGPT’s impact in higher education.”
