TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – The Indonesian Ministry of Education, Culture, Research and Technology admitted that it had not yet received a proposal from Stanford University in the United States for its plans to build a campus in the new capital of Indonesia, or IKN.
“Until today, we have yet to receive the proposal from Stanford University to open its branch in IKN,” said the ministry’s director general of high education, Nizam, when contacted on Saturday, March 9.
Since they have not received the proposal, Nizam said that he did not know the preparation of Stanford University for building a campus in IKN. Thus far, he went on, there are only four abroad campuses that opened their branches in Indonesia, namely Monash University, Western Sydney University, Deakin University, and Lancaster University.
The Chief of IKN Authority or OIKN, Bambang Susantono, previously said that Stanford University would open its campus in IKN in May 2024. “We also collaborate with a renowned international school namely Stanford University. Hopefully in May, they will start the campus building construction,” said Bambang Susantono in an online seminar on Friday, March 8.
Bambang added that Stanford University would first build a campus for research in IKN. Besides Stanford University, about seven to eight international campuses are ready to open branches in IKN, including Leiden University, as stated by the deputy of the green and digital transformation department of OIKN Prof. Mohammed Ali Berawi.
Tempo tried to confirm this to Stanford University through an e-mail sent on Saturday, March 9, but has not received a reply.
Editor’s note: A line was added at the end of the article, explaining that Tempo tried to reach Stanford for answers, but has not received any reply yet.
