PS4/PS5 Release: Exploit Host Connectivity Checker by Al-Azif – Wololo.net

The PS4/PS5 scene makes extensive use of so called “Fake DNS” servers to redirect some of the console’s embedded urls to Jailbreak utilities. Al-Azif has released a tool to verify that your ISP lets you use these Fake DNS.
Jailbreaking the PS4/PS5 consoles typically involves Webkit exploits, which are triggered by accessing specifically crafted html/javascript pages via the console’s web browser. The PS4 and PS5 don’t give us direct access to their browsers though, and tinkerers usually have to be a bit clever to access the Jailbreak urls. Generally, this is done by using a fake DNS service that will “trick” the console into redirecting any playstation.net (or similar) request to a different IP which is hosting the Jailbreak code.
Having such a DNS redirection mechanism working correctly is critical to 1) ensure a Jailbreak of the console will actually work and 2) block telemetry from Sony. Point 2 in particular can be critical to avoid an unintentional update of the console’s firmware, or a possible ban of a Jailbroken console from the PSN.
Unfortunately some Internet providers will sometimes hijack or bypass your own DNS requests and settings, for multiple reasons. From a 2019 ArsTechnica article:
ISPs sometimes find it useful to monitor their customers’ Internet traffic. For example, queries to malware-associated domains can be a signal that a customer’s computer is infected with malware. In some cases, ISPs also modify customers’ DNS queries in-flight. For example, an easy way to block children from accessing adult materials is with an ISP-level filter that rewrites DNS queries for banned domains. Some public Wi-Fi networks use modified DNS queries as a way to redirect users to a network sign-on page.
Some ISPs also use DNS snooping for more controversial purposes—like ad targeting or policing their networks for copyright infringement.
The result of ISPs hijacking your DNS requests, for the scene, is massive headaches and “noise”. When users attempting to run a Jailbreak have multiple issues with the Fake DNS servers, (some of which aren’t related to the Fake DNS Server itself, but to the ISP playing dirty), they’ll ask for help when they could actually verify themselves if the issue is on their (or their ISP’s) end.
Al-Azif provides a Fake DNS for the scene, which most of us have been using. This additional tool will help users debug issues on their end, before disrupting devs.
The developer has also published a more detailed FAQ if you’re running into issues with Al-Azif’s DNS Servers (or any other Fake DNS attempts on your PS4/PS5)
A personal note, if your ISP is tinkering with your DNS requests or settings, I’d recommend switching to a different Internet Provider.
