The Internet Society (ISOC) Nigeria commemorated Safer Internet Day on February 11, 2025, by organising training and awareness programs across 14 states.
The initiative is aimed to educate secondary school students on cyberbullying, online safety, and responsible internet usage.
As part of the celebration, ISOC Nigeria established temporary hubs in the participating states, where students received hands-on training. Safer Internet Clubs were also launched in all 14 schools, with students tasked with further educating their classmates and extending the initiative to neighboring schools.
During a chat, the President of ISOC Nigeria, Kunle Olorundare, stated that this initiative is one of ISOC Nigeria’s strategic programs and a way of giving back to the community. He expressed optimism that ISOC Nigeria would expand its reach to 36 states and the FCT in 2026, building on this year’s success.
“This year’s edition is a significant improvement over the 2024 program, where we conducted training in about seven states,” he said. He also emphasized ISOC’s openness to partnerships with credible organizations that share similar objectives.
The states where the event was held include Lagos, Ogun, Enugu, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Rivers, Abuja, Plateau, and Kogi, as well as Sokoto, Kano, Jigawa, Bauchi, and Yobe. Teachers and students actively participated in the training sessions, and feedback from educators highlighted their enthusiasm for being involved in such a significant initiative.
In Kogi State, the event was particularly noteworthy, as ISOC Nigeria partnered with the Ministry of Innovation, Science, and Technology to organize the training for the first time in Lokoja, kogi state capital. The Commissioner for Innovation, Science, and Technology commended the initiative and expressed hope for more similar programs in the future.
