In tonight’s edition, a page has turned in Franco-Ivorian military relations, as France hands over the keys to its sole military base in Côte d’Ivoire. Located near Abidjan airport, French forces have occupied the base for 47 years. Military relations are to remain strong between the two countries, but under a new form.
Also, In eastern DR Congo, boats are making a comeback on Lake Kivu, after a month-long travel ban caused by conflict. The cities of Goma and Bukavu, on opposite sides of the lake, are now linked again. The Rwanda backed-M23 rebels control all of Lake Kivu after its recent advances.
Finally, the 29th edition of the Pan-African Film festival, Fespaco, will open it doors this weekend in the Burkinabe’s capital Ouagadougou. One star will be greatly missed: Souleyman Cissé, the Malian filmmaker died yesterday and tributes have since poured in for the director seen as a pioneer of African cinema.
