RACINE, WI — Stay informed about what’s happening across Racine County. From the United Way accepting applications to reduce disparities through technology to job opportunities for CNA’s and a more detailed timeline for the proposed Buc-ee’s at I-94 and Elm Road, here’s a quick look at what’s happening.
The United Way of Racine County has announced that the Equity Through Technology Fund is now accepting applications for projects aimed at enhancing equity and reducing disparities through technology. Launched in collaboration with Microsoft in December 2023, the fund has already supported twelve initiatives, benefiting 638 Racine County residents.

Ali Haigh, President and CEO of United Way of Racine County, emphasized the organization’s dedication to bridging the digital divide:
“We are so pleased to be able to offer this second round of funding through the Equity Through Technology Fund, in collaboration with Microsoft. This initiative reflects our continued commitment to reducing barriers to technology access and ensuring all members of our community have the tools they need to thrive in an increasingly digital world.”
This announcement aligns with broader efforts in Racine to promote digital equity. Recently, the city approved a state-funded program providing free laptops, technical support, and training to 460 families over seven years, further demonstrating the community’s commitment to technological inclusivity.

On Friday, Feb. 7, people across the country will wear red to raise awareness about women’s heart disease, the leading cause of death among women. The Go Red for Women movement, led by the American Heart Association, aims to close gaps in research, treatment, and prevention.
For years, women have been underrepresented in heart disease studies, leading to misdiagnoses and delayed treatments. Many cases of cardiovascular disease can be prevented through education, early detection, and lifestyle changes such as a healthy diet, regular exercise, and stress management.
This annual event encourages community involvement, conversation, and advocacy. People can participate by wearing red, sharing heart health facts, and supporting research efforts.
As women’s heart health risks change over time, staying informed is essential. More information and resources are available through the American Heart Association.
Hospice Alliance is looking for dedicated Certified Nursing Aides (CNAs) to join its award-winning team. The organization will host walk-in interviews every Thursday in February from 1–3 p.m. at its Pleasant Prairie location (10220 Prairie Ridge Blvd.). The positions are full-time, first shift, with wages starting at $18.50 per hour and full benefits, including PTO, 403b match, and health, vision, and dental insurance.

Renowned journalist and political commentator John Nichols will speak at Siena Retreat Center in Racine on Tuesday, Feb. 25, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. His talk, Perspectives and Projections, will focus on today’s most pressing economic, political, and social issues.
Nichols is the national affairs correspondent for The Nation and associate editor of The Capital Times. He has authored and co-authored numerous books, including The Genius of Impeachment and The Fight for the Soul of the Democratic Party. Known for his historical depth and sharp political analysis, Nichols has been widely recognized for his journalistic integrity and deep understanding of civic engagement.

Nichols visited the greater-Racine area on Sept. 8, 2024, when he spoke about Project 2025 at J.I. Case High School.
The Village of Caledonia has introduced a Do Not Solicit Registry, allowing residents to opt out of commercial solicitations at their homes. This initiative accompanies a newly adopted ordinance renaming Transient Merchants as Direct Sellers.
Residents who enroll in the registry will prevent solicitors from engaging in commercial activities on their property. This move aims to enhance privacy and reduce unwanted sales visits.
Enrollment is open to all residents, and participation is voluntary. Those interested can sign up online at caledonia-wi.gov/donotsolicit.

The City of Oak Creek Plan Commission has released a revised review timeline for the proposed Buc-ee’s travel center at I-94 and Elm Road. A previously announced public hearing date was incorrect, and the updated schedule is as follows:
The Plan Commission will recommend but not approve applications, while the Common Council has the authority to make final decisions. Residents interested in the development process can attend public hearings for updates. More details are available on the City of Oak Creek’s website.
