MME Professor's Journey from Academia to Innovation – University of Waterloo

Dr. Mihaela Vlasea’s exemplary work in the manufacturing landscape highlights success earned from determination and an open mind. This mentality also proved to be fruitful during her transition from her academic to professional career.   
Originally in high school, she had no reason to support her motivation around joining the Mechanical and Mechatronics program at Waterloo. She’d simply heard of the continued success of the programs developed by the University and was fascinated. Based on that instinct, she underwent an academic path, considering career possibilities in engineering until she was offered a lab term with MME Professor Dr. Ehsan Toyserkani and began her interest in research, specifically in the orthopaedic field. Unexpectedly, her experience in an orthopaedic clinic redirected her passion to 3D printing and additive manufacturing, her current primary research of interest.   
Presently, she is widely recognized for her innovative leadership, revolutionizing the applications and functions of additive manufacturing technologies. She states, “I was grateful for that directional change”, as it gave her the necessary push toward the right path. As a result of her dedication, she holds the Associate Research Co-Director position at the Multi-Scale Additive Manufacturing (MSAM) Lab, alongside Dr. Toyserkani. In addition, she is a part of the ASTM F42 standards committee, focused on Additive Manufacturing Technologies.   
A redirection in one’s path can seem fearsome, but it provides an opportunity for growth and success. Her story serves as an inspiration for change, encouraging curiosity in the endless array of possibilities, instead of fear of the unknown.
