It might sound like something out of a Dan Brown book, but it’s not: The entire Internet is controlled by seven physical switches.
James Ball, from the prestigious ‘The Guardian’, has recently been allowed to observe the high-security ritual known as the key ceremony, reports the Telegraph.
The participants of this ceremony are part of an organization called “Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN)”.
ICANN is responsible for assigning numerical Internet addresses to websites and computers, and is responsible for translating those numerical addresses into normal web addresses that people type into their browsers.
If one person gains control of the ICANN database, that person controls the entire Internet. For example, that person may send people to fake banking websites.
On the other hand, if a disaster were to occur, the ICANN database may need to be rebuilt.
Therefore, ICANN has devised a way in which it does not give too much control to any one person. The organization has chosen seven people as key holders and each one holds a key to the Internet. Also, the organization has chosen seven more people as key holders: a total of 14 people.
These physical keys can unlock various safe deposit boxes around the world, and inside those safe deposit boxes are the smart key cards. Match all seven cards and you will have the ‘master key’.
The master key is also a computer code – password which can access the ICANN database.
Four times a year, since 2010, the seven key holders meet for the key ceremony where they generate a new master key – i.e. a new password.
Security is extremely tight and involves going through multiple locked doors, hand scanners, until you enter a room so secure that no electronic devices can enter it.
