How robotics is helping shape the ag tech space

An associate professor at Purdue University says robotics could help farmers increase efficiency to advance their operations.
Jian Jin says LeafSpec is a plant phenotyping device.
“It’s very labor intensive for humans to operate this kind of the sensor in the field,” he says. “We need to develop the robots to help deploy those sensors into the field so they can automatically collect data and then provide that information to the customers.”
He tells Brownfield a collaboration with the Mechanisms and Robotic Systems Lab will apply research directly to the field.
“Purdue will be the first place to try to solve nitrogen fertilization during the V6 stage in corn, tar spot disease detection and treatment, dicamba drifting,” he says. “All those could be resolved by our sensors and robots.”
Jin says the goal of the research is to provide advanced solutions for farmers to mitigate crop stress in the future.
