Gary Shapiro praises Taiwan’s semiconductor prowess

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Consumer Technology Association CEO Gary Shapiro said Taiwan’s technology is irreplaceable on Monday, the day before the CES opening.
Shapiro said Taiwan is an important country for the US and the world, per CNA. He praised the country’s semiconductor sector, which produces 60% of the world’s chips and 90% of the most advanced ones.
Although chipmaker TSMC will not be exhibiting, its technologies will be highlighted by other companies, Shapiro explained. Nvidia, for example, is a major TSMC customer and will be showcasing its new line of GPUs, per Reuters.
Additionally, with President-elect Donald Trump about to take office, new trade and technology policies have become a concern. Shapiro commented that competition with China and balancing cooperation with Taiwan will be key issues for the new administration.
Hosted by the CTA, CES is to be held from Jan. 7-10 in Las Vegas. It has attracted 4,000 manufacturers from 150 countries, including Taiwan OEMs like Wistron, Quanta, and Inventec.
Furthermore, the National Science and Technology Council will lead 72 startups to showcase innovations in AI and digital healthcare, while the Industrial Technology Research Institute will present projects from 10 research teams.
