Colombia receives EU support to create community internet networks – BNamericas English

Colombia has received a 1mn-euro (US$1.04mn) grant from the EU to establish 10 community internet networks in rural areas.
The project involves centers to access essential services such as health and education online and will be implemented by OAS/Citel, Colnodo and the Internet Society.
Colombia plans to reach 10,000 areas with community networks by 2026 through the Juntas de Internet program, which promotes the development of internet infrastructure by NGOs to provide local services. These networks should not exceed 3,000 accesses.
In addition, Colombia is promoting Wi-Fi internet access solutions under the Community Zones for Peace program. According to a document published by the ICT ministry, 831 community zones are in operation, 399 installed and 32 in the planning process.
The program is carried out in partnership with territorial renewal agency ART.
Spectrum
During the latest meeting of Citel’s permanent board, Colombia’s deputy connectivity minister Gabriel Jurado said that a mechanism is being designed to assign spectrum in the 900MHz band to organized communities in hard-to-reach areas.
He added that a model that does not compete with commercial networks will be prioritized.
