Sheriff Jeff Shaver announced that the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office is now operating an unmanned aerial system (UAS) Aviation Unit and is a cutting-edge drone program designed to enhance our capabilities in public safety and emergency response.
The drones allow for very rapid deployment in critical situations. The UAS Aviation Unit is deployed for search and rescue missions, locating missing children, tracking eluding suspects, crime scene mapping, overwatch, high-risk apprehensions, and emergency management operations, providing vital aerial support to ensure the safety and security of Cherokee County.
Sheriff Shaver said, “prior to the establishment of the UAS Unit, the options for aerial support was very limited and often untimely. The introduction of the Unit has revolutionized this capability, offering a quicker and much more cost-effective solution.”
Our drones are equipped with a variety of sophisticated camera systems, offering variable levels of zoom and thermal imaging capabilities. Additionally, they are fitted with powerful multi-thousand lumen spotlights, allowing for enhanced visibility and precise operations during night missions or in low-light conditions.
Our unit is comprised of a dedicated team of deputies, headed by Sgt. Thomas Key who has attained his FAA Part 107 certification, all trained to operate our fleet of drones in various critical scenarios.
Chief Deputy Josh Summerford said, “The Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office UAS Aviation Unit is an example of cutting-edge technology, being used to protect and serve our community with the latest advancements in aerial support.”
