Forrester identifies GenAI, TuringBots and IoT security as 2024 top emerging technologies – Channel Asia Singapore

In its report titled ‘The Top 10 Emerging Technologies in 2024,’ Forrester has identified generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) for visual content, genAI for language, TuringBots and internet of things (IoT) security as the top emerging technologies that will deliver the most immediate return on investment (ROI) for businesses in 2024 and beyond.
In the next two years, GenAI for visual content is expected to help businesses generate visual content for marketing, experiences and products. This can be done with advanced machine learning models that generate images or video from text, audio or video prompts.
Likewise, GenAI for language is predicted to advance rapidly in the next two years. Forrester outlined that the technology is currently delivering value in customer support and content creation, and has a hand in accelerating other technologies.
An example of technology accelerated by GenAI for language is TuringBots. These AI-powered software robots help developers build applications that deliver more than just code generation.
At the same time, Forrester stated that IoT security has grown in significance with the proliferation of devices, which has led to an “exponential explosion” in security attacks. As such, vendors are “competing and colliding” in the race to offer IoT security capabilities.
When it comes to emerging technologies with midterm ROI, where benefits will be realised in the next two to five years, Forrester sees AI agents as one of them.
According to the report, the role of autonomous workplace assistants or AI agents has expanded from the back office and employee assistance to customer-facing automation. Forrester predicts that these AI agents will grow increasingly sophisticated to better understand and respond to nuance and context.
Autonomous mobility is also expected to have midterm benefits. The technology is described to accelerate commercial and urban transportation ecosystem collaborations to orchestrate personalised mobility experiences for both customers and businesses.
Meanwhile, although advanced edge intelligence capabilities are still uncommon, with foundational elements like Apple Foundation Models becoming available, edge intelligence is predicted to offer midterm benefits as well.
The report also notes that quantum security will overhaul security systems for on-premises and cloud compute, storage and network infrastructure, commercial off-the-shelf software, commercial software-as-a-service offerings and in-house built software in the next two to five years.
Forrester also highlighted emerging technologies that will take at least five years to deliver tangible value for businesses. These emerging technologies are extended reality (XR) and zero trust edge (ZTE).
The report suggests that while XR is advancing in training and onboarding, businesses are resisting in investing in these tools until they see broad adoption.
Under the current data, only 8 per cent of adults in the United States own a virtual-reality headset and 16 per cent have used an augment-reality device or app.
Although ZTE has the potential to protect remote workers, retail outlets and branch offices with embedded local security, only a handful of ZTE solutions exist today. Additionally, legacy devices add additional management complexity.
“Tech leaders must be able to identify the right use cases and quantify potential benefits, costs, and risks across multiple horizons,” Forrester VP of emerging tech portfolio Brian Hopkins said.
“They need to spread investments out, with shorter-term technologies delivering quick returns and longer-term bets requiring more effort, more foundational investment, and the capacity to manage more risks.”
