The “Air Quality Monitoring System” project, which is part of the innovative concept of Cetinje Smart City, was awarded the WSIS Prize 2024 Champion award, announced the Engineering Chamber of Montenegro. As it is added, by receiving this recognition, the project was included in the top five projects in the world in the e-environment category, within the framework of the World Summit on the Information Society.
According to reports, the award was presented by Steven E. Drakeorn, public relations officer and spokesperson of the Embassy of the United States of America in Montenegro, and the event, which was held in the premises of the Chamber of Engineers, gathered numerous dignitaries.
The creator of this concept, a doctoral student at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering of the University of Montenegro, Ivan Martinović, in his brief address to the audience, pointed out that the project was implemented under the auspices of the American Embassy in Montenegro, that is, the American Corner in Cetinje, and that it includes the creation of a smart system for monitoring environmental parameters , including air quality and noise level.
He added that in addition to the creation of an innovative system, the project also had an educational character, enabling elementary and high school students from Cetinje to actively participate in its implementation, which is reflected in the mastery of digital skills, critical thinking skills, creative problem solving, and the ability to work in a team, which unfortunately, as he pointed out, they are not able to fully develop during the formal education process.
The activities that followed this project were recognized by the representatives of the municipality – the Capital of Cetinje, so soon after the completion of this project, a new phase of the implementation of the innovative concept “Cetinje Smart City” was started, according to the announcement of the Chamber of Engineers.
“This exceptional success represents a big step forward for Cetinje and Montenegro, which is the only country from the Western Balkans that can boast of this recognition, along with Slovenia, or the former Yugoslav states.
We would like to thank everyone who contributed to this extraordinary success with their presence. In particular, we would like to express our satisfaction that the Engineering Chamber of Montenegro could host this important event, which represents a turning point for our community and country,” the announcement concludes.
