African legislators pledge to enhance internet governance – ITWeb Africa

African legislators have vowed to strengthen the continent’s internet governance capabilities.
The pledge coincides with the four-day international meeting of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), which concludes in Rwanda on Thursday.
Parliamentarians from the African Parliamentary Network on Internet Governance (APNIG) met for a critical capacity-building session aimed at improving internet governance across the continent.
This event was hosted as part of the Coalition for Digital Africa’s capacity-building effort, Internet Governance Capacity Development for Governments and Lawmakers.
"The Parliamentarian workshop emphasised one of the coalition’s goals: improving technical capabilities to pave the way for a more robust and inclusive digital future for the continent," stated June Okal, senior manager of ICANN stakeholder engagement for East and Southern Africa.
The APNIG delegation also attended the ICANN High-Level Governmental Meeting, which was hosted by Paula Ingabire, Rwanda’s minister of ICT and Innovation.
Okal stated that the meeting’s goal was to raise political awareness of ICANN’s crucial role in the technical aspects of internet governance, as well as its direct impact on critical ICT concerns like cyber security and meaningful digital connectivity.
