The U.S. National Science Foundation Directorate for STEM Education works to develop a well-informed citizenry and a diverse and capable workforce of scientists, technicians, engineers, mathematicians and educators.
EDU’s programs support STEM education at all educational levels and in a variety of settings. The directorate:
EDU was formerly the Directorate of Education and Human Resources.
Promotes activities that strengthen STEM education for underserved communities, broaden their participation in the workforce, and increase knowledge about promoting inclusion. (EES was formerly the Division of Human Resource Development.)
Supports graduate students and the development of innovative programs to prepare tomorrow's leaders in STEM fields.
Supports innovative research, development and evaluation of learning and teaching across all STEM disciplines in formal and informal learning settings.
Strengthens STEM education at two- and four-year colleges and universities by improving curricula, instruction, assessment, laboratories, infrastructure, collaborations and the diversity of students and faculty.
This national initiative focuses on enhancing U.S. leadership by accelerating the inclusion of groups that have historically been excluded from or underserved in STEM.
Supports interdisciplinary traineeships that advance ways for graduate students in research-based master’s and doctoral degree programs to pursue a range of STEM careers.
