In this edition of Virginia Tech Hokies news, it was a very successful weekend on the diamond for the baseball and softball teams.
In this edition of Virginia Tech Hokies News, the basketball transfer portal opens Monday, the baseball team made a statement over the weekend at Louisville and the softball team picked up their third sweep of conference play of the 2024 season this weekend.
With the NCAA men's and women's regular-season and conference championships over, the NCAA Tournament and other postseason tournaments will take center stage over the next couple of weeks. With things set to get underway Tuesday, Monday is another big day for college basketball.
March 18 is the official opening to the transfer portal and players have already announced that they are entering it. Virginia Tech's Rodney Rice, who left the team in October and left the team on player short for the 2023-24 season, is entering the portal to look for a new home to continue his career. Last season, Kenny Brooks and Mike Young both added some key pieces from the portal to this season and Young really needs to hit the portal and hit hard for next season. Brooks will likely make additions as well.
After sweeping Notre Dame last weekend to begin ACC play, the Hokies went on the road and took two out of three at Louisville over the weekend. Carson DeMartini homered three times Sunday to power the Hokies to a 5-1 start in the ACC and 14-4 overall.

On the mound, Griffin Stieg worked 7.2 innings scattering five hits and striking out six for Virginia Tech, which should be ranked this week after their hot start to the season.
The Hokies softball team completed their third straight ACC sweep to begin the season with a 9-0 shutout of Pittsburgh Sunday. They scored four runs in the first, two in the second and three in the third to win in just five innings.
Addy Greene had a home run for Virginia Tech, while Emma Ritter had two hits and an RBI, and Cameron Fagan had two hits and two RBI. It's the second time in three years that the Hokies are 9-0 in conference play and they are 21-4-1 overall.
