Experts call for protection of East and Central Africa from security risks – EEAS

On March 1st, Ms. Maria Rosa Sabbatelli, Head of Unit for Global and Transregional Threats and Challenges for the Foreign Policy Instruments of the European Commission, held talks with officials of the Kenya Nuclear Regulatory Authority (KNRA) on how to work closely to counter security risks in the Central and Eastern Africa region.
This came amid efforts to further strengthen the European Union-funded Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (EU-CBRN) Centers of Excellence in the region.
Led by Mr. James Keter Chumba (Director-General of the KNRA), the talks touched upon the recent and upcoming activities, with special focus on the strengthening the relationship with the African Union in the area of reducing the risks of CBRN materials. The status of the network and its 11 partner countries in the Eastern and Central Africa region was discussed, as well as recommendations from the participants on the strengths and opportunities of the EU CBRN CoE Initiative.
KNRA Director General James Keter stressed the need to make the facility the regional centre for nuclear security and radiation safety.
The EU-CBRN Centre of Excellence has three African regional secretariats with 28 partner countries. The North Africa and Sahel Regional secretariat is based in Algeria, the African Atlantic Façade Regional Secretariat is in Morocco and the Eastern and Central Africa Regional Secretariat is in Kenya.

Invited were the CBRN National Focal Point of Kenya, Mr. William Munyoki, Deputy Government Chemist, contact point for Kenya at the International Science and Technology Centre (ISTC), Ms. Roselida Owuor, Director Research, Science and Technology, State Department of Education and Higher Research, Dr. Reychad Abdoul, Team leader of CBRN CoE project MEDISAFE and Ms. Sharon Lewis and Ms. Myat Su Win of UNOPS, who are supporting the implementation of a EU CBRN CoE equipment delivery project in the region.
