Connecticut’s capital, Hartford, is set to host an unprecedented event—’Moving Beyond Implications: Research into Policy’—on January 9 at the Legislative Office Building. The conference, a brainchild of State Representative Jaime Foster and UConn associate professor Kerri Raissian, aims to facilitate a symbiotic relationship between the world of academia and politics. The event’s primary objective is to foster an understanding of complex scientific studies amongst legislators, given that these studies are frequently obscured behind paywalls or inaccurately summarized.
The conference, co-organized by Raissian and Foster, is focused on bridging the gap between researchers and policymakers. This initiative strives to address the existing challenges in the communication and understanding of scientific research amongst legislators. The event’s agenda includes building partnerships and disseminating research that can directly influence Connecticut’s policy landscape.
Researchers from prominent Connecticut institutions, including UConn and Yale University, will present their work on topics pertinent to legislative committees. These presentations, carefully selected based on alignment with anticipated legislative work, cover a wide range of subjects, with particular emphasis on children’s mental health. The ultimate goal is to foster relationships between scientists and policymakers, enabling a more streamlined and informed policy-making process.
The conference has garnered attention from high-level attendees, including Connecticut’s Lt. Governor, House leaders, and representatives from various state departments. These high-profile attendees highlight the importance and potential impact of the conference.
