This is a machine translation of MinTIC‘s press release
The MinTIC celebrates the recent election of Colombia as part of the countries that make up the vice presidency of the Government Advisory Committee (GAC) during the period 2024 – 2025, which it will share with Lebanon, the United Kingdom, China and Egypt. This election will allow direct advice to be provided to the board of directors of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), an organization whose objective is to ensure that the Internet is secure, stable and unified.
“The country is currently leading international decision-making regarding the statutes, activities and policies of the Icann corporation, especially where there may be an interaction between the organization’s activities and national or global laws. This is a great opportunity for Colombia to demonstrate that it can lead the proper functioning of the Internet,” said ICT Minister Mauricio Lizcano ( @MauricioLizcano ).
This designation allows the country to have a say in the operation of the Internet domain name system and contribute to the initial phase of Icann’s policy development processes, to ensure consistency with the public interest of the Internet community. In addition, it gives Colombia a leadership role in online meetings and debates with other members, including national governments and intergovernmental organizations.
Icann’s operation, as a non-profit association, is important because it promotes competition and develops unique Internet identifier policies. It is worth noting that it does not control the content of the website, but, thanks to its role in coordinating the domain name system, it has a great impact on the expansion and evolution of the Internet.
