Nigeria’s ICT Potential Signals Strong Trajectory Towards Digital Economy.

Mr. Taiwo Peter Akinremi, Digital Inclusion Expert.

Nigeria is positioned for a major shift to a digital economy, driven by the explosive growth and untapped potential within its Information Communication Technology (ICT) sector, according to an industry expert.

Mr. Taiwo Peter Akinremi, the West Africa Regional Coordinator for the African Civil Society for the Information Society (ACSIS), affirmed in a recent interview that current statistics on internet usage and overall sectoral growth clearly indicate the nation’s preparedness for an ICT-driven system and processes.

“The surge in internet connectivity among Nigerians is a direct measure of the enormous opportunities present in the ICT sector,” Akinremi stated. He emphasized that internet access is no longer a luxury but an essential commodity globally and domestically, poised to make an immense contribution to the national economy.

The impact is already visible across all facets of life. Beyond economics, the sector holds significant socio-developmental potential. Akinremi noted that the internet is the engine that strengthens education quality, facilitates improved livelihoods, and is a vital tool for poverty reduction. Furthermore, it acts as an empowering force, enabling citizens to demand greater transparency, accountability, and good governance.

The digital revolution has fundamentally reshaped the Nigerian business environment, fostering both financial inclusion and healthy competition. The shift in business conduct is profound:

“The internet has enabled businesses to reach wider customer bases, enhance brand awareness, and significantly boost profitability,” Akinremi explained.

It provides companies with critical tools for success, including access to data exploration for business research, lead generation, customized advertising, and, crucially, the ability to achieve wide business coverage and tap into both regional and international markets.

In summary, the substantial capacity for employment generation and trade facilitation—both within the region and globally—underscores the ICT sector’s pivotal role in Nigeria’s aspiration to become a leading digital economy in Africa.
