Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission has won the World Summit on Information Society Award 2021 for introducing SIM registration process in biometric system.
The award was presented at a virtual event organised by the International Telecommunication Union on Tuesday, said a press release.
After receiving the award, prime minister’s information and communication technology adviser Sajeeb Wazed Joy and posts and telecommunications minister Mustafa Jabbar addressed the virtual event.
The BTRC Central Biometric Verification Monitoring Platform or CBVMP project received the award as a winner of the Action Line C5 category of WSIS competitions.
Applications were accepted in a total of 16 categories and a total of 16 projects in each category were declared as final winners.
BTRC participated in this competition for the first time this year. Shyamsunder Sikder, the present chairman of the commission, after taking charge, gave instructions to take part in this competition.
The commission campaigned through social media, leaflets and documentaries, and the CBVMP project received more than 15,000 votes.
BTRC director general (systems and services) Brigadier General Md Nasim Parvez briefed the media about CBVMP at the press conference organised on the occasion of the award ceremony. BTRC chairman Shyam Sundar Sikder addressed the gathering as chief guest.
Md Mohiuddin Ahmed, Commissioner of Engineering and Operations Department of the commission, Abu Syed Diljar Hussain, Commissioner of Legal and Licensing Department of BTRC, director general (administration) Md Delwar Hossain, director general (spectrum) Brigadier General Md Shahidul Alam, director general (E&O) Brigadier General Md Ehsanul Kabir, director general (legal and licensing) Ashish Kumar Kundu, director general (finance, accounts and revenue) Md Mesbahuzzaman and other senior BTRC officials were present.
