Tucows, a major player in the domain name registrar industry, has recently partnered with Orange Domains, marking a significant step towards the integration of traditional Domain Name System (DNS) with the Bitcoin Name System (BNS) to foster web3 digital identities. This collaboration aims to leverage decentralized apps and introduce new top-level domain services, blending the realms of conventional internet infrastructure with the burgeoning field of web3. Don Ruiz, former Automattic executive and now General Manager at Orange Domains, reveals plans to launch a DNS-based top-level domain later this year, promising enhanced web3 functionality for registrants.
Orange Domains’ initiative is supported by significant partnerships with web3 companies like Trust Machines and Hiro Systems, both of which are pivotal to the project’s ambition of expanding BNS’s utility. Trust Machines, having secured $150 million in funding, exemplifies the financial and technological investment being poured into making web3 identities more functional and accessible. The involvement of Tucows, with its vast distribution network and status as the second-largest domain name registrar, is poised to significantly amplify Orange Domains’ reach and impact within the digital ecosystem.
The push to integrate DNS with web3 technologies is not unique to Orange Domains. Competitors like Ethereum Name Service offer similar capabilities, allowing domain names to double as wallet addresses. However, the uniqueness of Orange Domains’ approach lies in its commitment to launching new top-level domains (TLDs) specifically designed for web3 functionalities. This strategy not only differentiates them from rivals but also complements existing web3 TLDs like .box and the upcoming .vana domains, which are introducing web3 features to the domain name landscape.
