Morocco, Ghana, Nigeria, South Africa, and Senegal Lead United Airlines’ Groundbreaking Global Expansion, Connecting the U.S. to Exciting New Destinations – Travel And Tour World

Friday, March 14, 2025
United Airlines expands its global reach with new routes to Morocco, Ghana, Nigeria, South Africa, and Senegal, offering travelers unique and exciting destinations.
United Airlines has recently embarked on one of the most significant international network expansions in modern aviation history. Over the past two years, the airline has introduced over a dozen new routes, spanning destinations worldwide, many of which cater to traditionally lower-volume leisure spots. Among these routes, one of the standout services is United’s seasonal flight from Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) to Marrakesh Menara Airport (RAK). This non-stop connection links the airline’s primary East Coast hub with a rapidly growing travel destination in North Africa.
This flight mirrors United’s other seasonal routes to Europe, designed to meet demand during peak travel seasons. What sets this service apart, however, is that it operates not during the European summer when U.S. travelers flock to Europe, but rather during the winter months, with the first departure taking place in October. As the calendar nears March, United prepares to suspend this service for the summer season, making its aircraft available for more profitable European routes. The final flight between Marrakesh and Newark is scheduled for March 27th, 2025, with the route expected to resume on October 25th, 2025, according to aviation analytics platform Cirium.

A closer look at the Marrakesh route

United Airlines made history by becoming the first U.S.-based carrier to offer direct flights to Marrakesh when it launched this service. Operating three times per week, this route utilizes a Boeing 767-300ER, equipped with 46 Polaris business class seats and 22 Premium Plus seats. During the winter season, United Flight 828 departs Newark on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays at 9:45 PM, landing in Marrakesh the next morning around 11:00 AM.

The return leg, United Flight 627, leaves Marrakesh on Sundays, Wednesdays, and Fridays at 1:20 PM, reaching Newark at approximately 4:25 PM. This route to Marrakesh marked the fifth African destination served by United Airlines, joining Accra in Ghana, Lagos in Nigeria, Johannesburg, and Cape Town in South Africa. The expansion was part of United’s largest-ever winter schedule, with plans to launch a new route to Dakar, Senegal, in the summer of 2025.

Why launch a winter-only route?

There are several compelling reasons why United Airlines chose to introduce this winter-only service. For one, Marrakesh is an increasingly popular destination for winter travelers, as its summer temperatures can be prohibitively hot, deterring visitors. By operating this route during the cooler months, United taps into a market that is eager to explore Marrakesh without enduring the extreme heat.
Additionally, the winter-only schedule allows United to optimize its fleet. The airline can use aircraft for seasonal routes that would otherwise be sitting idle during the summer months, ensuring efficient fleet management year-round.
