Alstom, a global leader in smart and sustainable mobility solutions, has entered into a significant partnership with CZ Loko, a renowned manufacturer of diesel-electric shunting locomotives. This collaboration sees Alstom supplying 50 Onvia Cab ETCS (European Train Control System) on-board units to CZ Loko over the next two years, with the total value of the contract reaching EUR 9 million. The installation of the onboard units will commence in March 2025, marking a major step towards enhancing railway safety and operational efficiency.
The Onvia Cab units will be installed on MUV 75, a specialized double-axle vehicle used for railway line maintenance. These units are integral to improving the safety and security standards of rail transport, ensuring the vehicles comply with the latest security requirements. The MUV 75 vehicles, once equipped with the Onvia Cab systems, will be delivered by CZ Loko to the Railway Administration (Správa železnic), marking a key milestone in modernizing Czech railway infrastructure.
Onvia Cab is a cutting-edge onboard ETCS unit developed by Alstom, designed for seamless integration on both new and retrofitted trains. It meets the TSI 2023 standard at Baseline 3 level, guaranteeing compatibility with the most current regulatory requirements. Alstom, as a leader in ETCS onboard technology, has equipped 70% of ERTMS (European Rail Traffic Management System)-enabled trains in Europe, with over 25,000 units operating on more than 200 vehicle types across the globe. With over three decades of expertise in delivering top-tier, interoperable systems, Alstom’s solutions are known for their exceptional technical quality and flexible design, making them adaptable to all types of rolling stock across a wide range of projects.
In the Czech Republic, the operation of the European Train Control System began in January 2025, monitoring a total of 622 kilometers of major railway lines. With an impressive operational availability of 99.2%, this system ensures the highest safety standards for Czech railways. Alstom remains the country’s largest supplier of mobile ETCS units, underscoring its leadership in enhancing rail transport safety and efficiency.
The partnership between Alstom and CZ Loko sets a new benchmark in rail safety and technological advancement, contributing to the modernization of railway infrastructure in the Czech Republic and beyond.
“The contract is a continuation of our long-term cooperation with CZ Loko and at the same time confirms our position as a leader in the installation of ETCS on-board units. Currently, Alstom solutions account for over 80% of ETCS onboard unit installations in the Czech Republic. With tens of thousands of installations, Onvia Cab solutions are proven, reliable and very flexible, ” says Dan Kurucz, Managing Director of Alstom Czech Republic.
