Community Fibre outage affects thousands in London as company races for a fix – Mix Vale

A major internet outage disrupted Community Fibre users across London on Monday, February 17, 2025, leaving thousands without service. The issue, reported around midday, affected multiple areas across the capital, leading to frustration among residents and businesses. Community Fibre, one of London’s prominent fibre-optic broadband providers, acknowledged the disruption and confirmed that its engineers were working to restore connectivity as quickly as possible. However, customers turned to social media to voice their dissatisfaction, demanding transparency and real-time updates.
Despite the service failure, some users managed to restore connectivity by adjusting their DNS settings to Google’s public DNS (8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4). This workaround helped many bypass the issue temporarily while Community Fibre’s engineers investigated the root cause of the outage. Customers, however, expressed frustration over the lack of immediate communication from the provider, as many rely on the service for remote work, online learning, and entertainment.
The outage affected a wide range of users, from individual households to small businesses, raising concerns about the reliability of the provider’s infrastructure. The disruption also reignited debates over the dependability of fibre-optic internet in London, with some questioning whether alternative providers offer better stability and customer support.
The widespread nature of the disruption quickly became evident as users from different boroughs of London reported service failures. Community Fibre, known for delivering gigabit-speed broadband, typically markets itself as a reliable alternative to mainstream providers. However, the latest connectivity failure sparked concerns about network resilience, especially among customers who depend on uninterrupted internet for professional and academic purposes.
The lack of immediate information from the company further intensified user frustration. On social media platforms like Twitter (formerly X), users flooded Community Fibre’s account with complaints, demanding answers. The company eventually responded with an apology, stating that its engineers were investigating the issue and that resolving it was their “top priority.”
Although Community Fibre did not initially disclose the technical cause of the outage, many users and IT experts speculated that it was related to a DNS failure. This type of issue prevents customers from accessing websites, even when their internet connection remains physically active.
Some tech-savvy users quickly found a temporary solution by modifying their DNS settings to Google’s public DNS. This workaround involved:
For many affected users, this fix restored internet access immediately, while others continued to experience instability.
As complaints surged, Community Fibre issued an official statement, acknowledging that the disruption was affecting a significant number of customers. The company assured users that its engineers were “working around the clock” to diagnose and resolve the problem.
However, the timing of the outage caused additional frustration. Just before the service failure, Community Fibre had posted a social media message about “random acts of kindness,” prompting sarcastic replies from affected users. One user responded, “How about you kindly restore our internet services?”, a sentiment echoed by many.
While the company’s apology and updates helped mitigate some anger, the incident raised concerns about the long-term reliability of the provider.
With a significant portion of Londoners relying on stable internet for remote work, education, and business operations, the Community Fibre outage had severe consequences.
The outage underscored the risks of depending solely on one broadband provider, prompting discussions on the importance of backup internet solutions.
Internet service providers (ISPs) can experience outages due to a variety of factors:
This is not the first major disruption reported by Community Fibre. While the provider generally enjoys a positive reputation for high-speed connectivity, occasional outages have raised questions about network resilience.
Some customers, particularly those in densely populated areas, have reported intermittent service failures in the past. The most recent outage has renewed debates over whether Community Fibre needs to invest more in infrastructure and failover mechanisms to prevent similar incidents in the future.
With broadband disruptions becoming increasingly common, customers can take proactive steps to minimize their dependence on a single ISP. Some key strategies include:
As Community Fibre works to restore full service and investigate the root cause, users are closely watching how the company handles customer compensation and future service improvements.
With growing competition in London’s broadband market, ISPs must prioritize service reliability, infrastructure investments, and customer support to maintain consumer trust.
