KABUL, Afghanistan — Seventeen Afghan nationals have been released from prisons in Egypt and several African countries, including Morocco, Libya, Sudan, and Mauritania, over the past three months, the Taliban-controlled Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Saturday.
In a statement, the ministry said the individuals were freed through efforts coordinated by the Taliban-led Afghan embassy in Cairo and have since returned to Afghanistan on Ariana Airlines flights.
The ministry emphasized that its diplomatic missions would continue working to “support the rights of Afghans.”
Taliban have not provided details on the identities of those released or the reasons for their arrests.
