Shortly after US President Donald Trump announced the formation of an AI infrastructure investment from the White House, the major tech moguls erupted to a public spar as Elon Musk mocked its formation and ChatGPT’s maker OpenAI CEO Sam Altman defended it.
Trump announced the formation of ‘Stargate’ to develop data centres and various other AI infrastructure in the US with a $500 billion joint venture between SoftBank, OpenAI, Oracle and MGX as initial equity funders. The project’s technology partners include Arm Holdings, Microsoft and Nvidia and ‘Stargate’ demands an initial investment of $100 billion to kickoff its work.
The announcement made in the White House featured Donald Trump, Sam Altman, SoftBank CEO Masayoshi Son and Oracle’s CTO Larry Ellison.
OpenAI shared the project’s details on X and wrote, “SoftBank and OpenAI are the lead partners for Stargate, with SoftBank having financial responsibility and OpenAI having operational responsibility.”
In response to the post, Elon Musk wrote, “They don’t actually have the money. SoftBank has well under $10B secured. I have that on good authority.”
OpenAI detailed the project stating, “This infrastructure will secure American leadership in AI, create hundreds of thousands of American jobs, and generate massive economic benefits for the entire world.”
Stating about industrialization, OpenAI said that ‘Stargate’ will “not only support the re-industrialization of the United States but also provide a strategic capability to protect the national security of America and its allies”
OpenAI’s CEO Sam Altman retorted to Elon Musk’s jibe at the ‘Stargate’ and said that the world’s richest person is “wrong” in his assessment of the project.
Altman in his X post wrote, “Wrong, as you surely know. want to come visit the first site already under way? This is great for the country. I realize what is great for the country isn’t always what’s optimal for your companies, but in your new role I hope you’ll mostly put America first.”
