Video surveillance tech earns IoT Breakthrough award – Vodafone

Vodafone has won five IoT Breakthrough Awards since 2017 and this win is Vodafone Business’ second in as many years, following on from their ‘IoT Alliance of the Year’ award in 2024.
Then, the company was recognised for its work on a smart meter initiative with Data Communications Company. This time, however, attention has turned to the challenges faced by businesses when using existing CCTV infrastructure.
With companies often held back by bandwidth, cost and security limitations, Connected Spaces Vision provides more predictable costs, while it is also quicker to set up and more flexible than traditional wired CCTV.
Vodafone’s reliable Internet of Things (IoT) connectivity sits at the heart of this, as does a patented AI-based video codec from AI video compression and analytics company Digital Barriers, who partnered with Vodafone Business to develop the solution.
“We’re bringing genuine innovation to solve a long-standing industry challenge, which has led to the incorrect conclusion that live video is just too costly, too unreliable, and too difficult to achieve nationally over mobile connectivity.”
Jack Bulpin, Lead Product Manager, IoT, 5G & MPN, Vodafone UK
By reducing bandwidth by up to 90%, cameras that typically need 3-5 megabits per second for live streaming can now operate at between 300-500 kilobits per second. Meanwhile, video transmission can drop to 9 kilobits per second.
As part of the platform, Vodafone also offers businesses an unlimited data plan, making Connected Spaces Vision an ideal solution for those with remote, mobile and temporary operations, where conventional, wired CCTV is often an impractical option.
Better yet, the technology has been designed to work with standard IP cameras, meaning customers needn’t replace their existing hardware to experience these benefits.
Industries Connected Spaces Vision can impact
Conducted by IoT Breakthrough, the IoT Breakthrough Awards programme is in its ninth year and recognises technologies, products and companies leading the way in today’s global IoT market.
