On Wednesday, June 12, over 500 WestJet Group executives convened at the company’s annual leadership summit. The event was dedicated to celebrating achievements from the previous year and igniting enthusiasm, unity, and forward momentum. The day was filled with activities centered around team building, sharing success stories, and looking forward to future triumphs.
Having surpassed its pre-2019 capacity, WestJet Group has demonstrated its resilience and consistent growth. The airline has refined its strategy, established in 2022, to reinforce its role as a value-focused airline, catering to a wide range of travelers from budget-conscious to premium customers, across its entire fleet, all while prioritizing cost-efficiency.
The airline is proud of its top rankings as the leading carrier in Western Canada and the foremost leisure airline providing the greatest capacity for Canadians traveling to Latin America and the Caribbean. It also celebrated five consecutive profitable quarters.
Despite expected challenges in the upcoming year, such as intense competition, delayed aircraft deliveries, and stringent cost objectives, WestJet’s leadership team is prepared to tackle these hurdles to ensure the airline continues to offer friendly, reliable, and economical air travel.
Advancements in Operations Through Technology
WestJet has focused on enhancing technology to better serve its guests, particularly through self-service options. Since the last summit, notable improvements have been made by the collaboration of the Digital, IT, and Operations teams. Notable achievements include the introduction of a passport scanning feature in the WestJet app, which has been utilized by 77% of its passengers, significantly reducing congestion at check-in counters.
Further investments in self-service technologies have shown substantial benefits, especially during inclement weather which can cause delays or cancellations. Currently, 70% of guest itineraries can be adjusted or cancelled through the WestJet app during such disruptions. The airline aims to increase this capability to cover over 95% of itineraries.
Sunwing Update
The synergy between WestJet Airlines and Sunwing Vacations exemplifies the integration of air travel and tour operations under the WestJet Group umbrella. The leadership at Sunwing discussed various topics, including product offerings, excursions, and culinary experiences. They also introduced a contest to name a new signature drink at the Planet Hollywood Cancun hotel lobby bar.
Where People & Culture Translate into Brand
Joining WestJet means more than just operating flights; it signifies a commitment to connecting people, cultures, and aspirations worldwide. WestJet thrives when its employees, known as WestJetters, are fully engaged and performing at their peak.
Community Impact
As air travel is crucial for connecting the expansive regions of Canada, WestJet remains committed to making it accessible. The airline collaborates with national charities and local groups, significantly impacting communities through its Airport Giving program and the volunteer efforts of WestJetters, who contributed over 35,000 hours in 2023.
During this year’s summit, three longstanding partners, Hope Air, GlobalMedic, and LiveDifferent, shared the profound effects of their collaborative efforts with WestJet, from providing essential travel for medical needs to empowering youth and responding to disasters.
