Canonical today announced Ubuntu Core 24 as the latest stable version of this official Ubuntu flavor optimized for IoT (Internet of Things), as well as embedded and edge devices.
Ubuntu Core 24 comes as a fully containerized variant of Ubuntu 24.04 LTS (Noble Numbat) introducing a fully preemptible kernel to ensure time-bound responses and enable advanced real-time features out of the box on Ubuntu Certified Hardware from Canonical’s partners.
Highlights include validation sets for creating custom Ubuntu Core images, greater control over automatic network requests, offline remodeling, improved GPU integration for AIoT and graphics applications, and support for Ubuntu Frame, Canonical’s secure display server for embedded Linux.
In addition, this release brings new device management integrations with Canonical’s Landscape management tool, Azure IoT Edge snaps for the seamless integration of Ubuntu Core devices with Azure IoT Edge services, and new Robot Operating System (ROS) integrations for robotics developers who need modular deployments.
Ubuntu Core 24 is available for download from the official website and supported on Raspberry Pi 2, 3, 4, and 5, Raspberry Pi Compute Module 3 (CM3) and 4 (CM4), Qualcomm DragonBoard, Intel NUC, as well as generic x86_64, x86 KVM, and RISC-V devices.
The installation requires at least 384MB RAM (512MB with UEFI Secure Boot and FDE) and a minimum of 512MB of local storage. Ubuntu Core 24 is available as both Ubuntu Server and Ubuntu Desktop images.
