Automation has been central to global urbanization, and there is no better example of this than the automated traffic light. It's been essential to the development of cities. Without them, our cities would be significantly less efficient and more dangerous. We have also implemented many other automated systems, from street lamps to self-serve parking systems, making urban life more pleasant and vastly more profitable for commerce, central to a city's function.
Now, as we enter the age of smart cities, new innovations powered by low-cost, high-impact IoT platforms have emerged as pivotal in this evolution. These platforms extend the capabilities of urban automation, enabling them to go from simple ‘dumb’ automated systems to data-driven ‘smart’ systems that can self-optimize, self-monitor, and, in the future, self-repair, transforming how cities operate and interact with their citizens.
In many cities, traffic lights operate against a preset schedule. They do not adapt in real time to changes in traffic flow, weather conditions, and even emergency responses. But with new cloud-enabled IoT platforms (like the one available from Wilderness Labs), installing a small microprocessor on a given block’s traffic system allows it to connect to the cloud easily. Transforming it into an intelligent traffic system that can access cloud applications and data from various sensors throughout the city, adjusting traffic signals to minimize congestion and reduce idling, thus reducing pollution.
What has held back the wholesale rollout of smart systems to all cities has been a lack of flexible, low-cost IoT platforms adept at upgrading or working along SCADA systems (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition), which is the traditional approach to automating processes with custom computerized systems and electronic, for nearly 50 years. However, this barrier is being overcome with the advent of modern IoT solutions. These new platforms can retrofit old systems, providing enhanced capabilities such as real-time data processing, predictive analytics, and remote control functionalities.
For instance, an old water distribution network can be upgraded with IoT sensors to monitor water flow, pressure, and quality. This allows real-time monitoring and management, reducing water waste and promptly identifying and addressing leaks or contamination.
By integrating low-cost IoT into existing systems, cities have a clear upgrade path to improve operational efficiency and enhance residents' quality of life and businesses' ability to thrive.
