Company forms partnership with plans to go after two new top level domain names.
Blockchain company 3DNS (not to be confused with D3) and the .box top level domain announced a partnership with Optimism to apply for .chain and .super in the next round of ICANN’s new top level domain name expansion. Optimism is an Ethereum layer-2 scaling solution.
The partnership will initially launch a third level domain solution on .box so that people can register subdomains at .chain.box and .super.box. If it gets the top level domains from ICANN, it will then be able to offer example.chain and example.super domains. Presumably, the group plans to offer some sort of priority to people who register third level domain names ahead of time.
.Chain will surely be a contested top level domain name in the next round. In its release announcing the partnership, 3DNS noted that it intends to pursue the domains in the “upcoming ICANN gTLD auction.”
You can learn more about 3DNS in my podcast interview with Paul Gauvreau.

.Chain will have multiple L2 chain bidders in partnership for the TLD and could likely go into the 8 digits on this string. No announcements will be made until things settle out in the space. We applied and abandoned the TM in 2022 after acquiring for a good amount and started using and building on the .Chain on HNS. Also minted a .chain contract on the EVM. Will see how the .wallet case goes with UD/ namecheap and fully intend to challenge 3dns and others for the string as we have over 300 great chain assets that will be protected in our native web2 environment. Will be fun to see how the TLD space plays out over next couple years.
