Indian shipbuilder Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd (MDL) demonstrated autonomous and remote control technology capabilities on tug Andaman
Indian Register of Shipping (IRS) certified this technology, supplied by Robosys Automation & Robotics, after reviewing the autonomy concept as it was tested on this 30-m tugboat in the busy waters of Mumbai Harbour, India.
IRS reviewed the system documentation, software quality and detailed risk assessment in accordance with IRS Guidelines for Remotely Operated Vessels and Autonomous Surface Vessels.
The classification society also rigorously tested the autonomous navigation system and software at the manufacturer’s development centre through simulation, as per approved factory acceptance-test procedures.
IRS said the autonomous configuration includes a remote-control centre (RCC), specifically designed to control and monitor the vessel from a remote location.
On Andaman, IRS verified system functionality as per the approved harbour acceptance-test procedures.
“Remote control of propulsion and steering systems from the RCC, as well as monitoring key machinery, navigation parameters and situational awareness systems at RCC were also verified as part of harbour trials,” IRS said.
During sea trials on 23-24 May, IRS watched the autonomous system operations and verified it demonstrated collision avoidance in accordance with the international regulations for preventing collisions at sea (COLREG), alongside various emergency response measures such as handling the loss of primary controls and communication with the RCC.
These sea trials were supported by the Indian Navy that deployed an interceptor boat, contributing to the safety and success of the testing process.
Robosys Automation said this is the first-ever system to meet IMO Degree 4 category for autonomous vessel systems.
This project by MDL was part of the Indian government’s initiative to further enhance prospects for the nation’s system developers and shipyards as interest in autonomous vessels grows in mission-critical operations.
“This collaboration underscores IRS’ commitment to advancement in the Indian maritime industry through cutting-edge autonomous technology,” said IRS head of defence Cdr K K Dhawan.
“Leveraging the experience gained from this and similar projects, IRS is positioned to assist the industry in developing advanced autonomous systems while ensuring compliance with stringent safety and quality standards.”
